If you suffer from problems due to low blood pressure, you must have been prescribed Levophed at some time or other? Read on to know all about this drug including its uses, dosage, interactions and side effects.

What is Levophed?

Levophed is the brand name of Norepiphrine, a drug having action similar to adrenaline. This drug acts by narrowing the blood vessels, which is useful in cases of Hypotension. Levophed Bitartarate is the brand name of Norepiphrine. Noreepinephire is a catecholamine and is used for curing hypotension. The drug is extremely useful in various surgical procedures which are frequently associated with sharp decline in blood pressure.

Mechanism of Levophed Action

Picture of Levophed

Picture 1 – Levophed

Levophed (Norepiphrine) is synthesized from tyrosine through an enzymatic process. During this process intermediates, namely L-dihydroxyphenylalanine and dopamine, are also formed. Thereafter, the drug moves to synaptic vesicles with the help of vesicular transport. From this site the drug is released to synaptic cleft where it acts on the adrenergic receptors.

Levophed Uses

The medication is used to cure disorders like mental depression, hypotension and hyperactivity disorder. Since the drug is not capable of passing the blood brain barrier, it has to be administered with amphetamines for better performance. Read and know about the use of Levophed (Norepiphrine) in various diseases:

  1. Hypotension: The medicine is mainly used to cure cases of Hypotension. The drug acts by stimulating adrenergic receptors which further results in vasoconstriction. Due to this reason, the drug is extremely beneficial in treating various types of shocks such as septic shock and neurogenic shock. This drug reprtedly involves fewer side effects. Naturally, it is preferred over Dopamine.
  2. Hyperactvity Disorder: The drug is extremely effective in curing Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It relives various symptoms of the disease by increasing the efficiency of the nervous system of the patient. As a result, he/she is able to concentrate better on work.
  3. Depression: Increased amount of Noreepinephrine also helps in depression. It works by increasing the serotonin activity.

Dosage and Administration of Levophed

Certain factors have to be taken into account during the administration of Levophed.

Dilution

Levophed is required to be diluted in 5 percent dextrose injection. The drug should not be administered in a saline solution. The blood pressure and breathing should also be properly monitored during the administration of the drug. Immediately communicate health problems like irritation or difficulty in breathing, if you notice any, to your doctor.

Average Dose

A solution used for adults is made by adding 4mg of the drug in 1000 ml of 5 % dextrose solution. The rate of flow should be adjusted thereafter as per the medical condition of the patient.

Duration of Therapy

The drug should be used for the entire duration until proper blood pressure is achieved. The amount of drug should be decreased slowly, as sudden withdrawal of the drug infusion can lead to health complications.

Side Effects of Levophed

Image of Levophed

Picture 2 – Levophed Image

Levophed is also associated with some side effects but it is comparatively safer in comparison to other similar drugs like dopamine. Know about some of the major side effects of the medicine.

  • Irregular heart beat
  • Difficulties in breathing
  • Muscular pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Blue lips
  • Headache
  • Mental confusion
  • Blurred speech
  • Absence of urination
  • Rashes on skin (occasional)

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your physician immediately. You may be asked to discontinue the drug for some time to avoid these side effects. Being updated about the side effects will help you identify them at earlier stages and help prevent further complications.

Overdose of Levophed

An overdose of this drug is associated with problems like

  • Severe headache
  • Blurred vision
  • Mental confusion
  • Seizures
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulties in breathing

Back pain is another common indication of a Levophed overdose.

Precautions with Levophed

There are a number of precautions to be taken with Levophed. If you have high blood pressure, thyroid problem or asthma, communicate the problems to your doctor in advance. Doctors may suggest you to use any other alternative instead of norepinephire (Levophed) or make necessary adjustments in dosage. Again, this is an FDA pregnancy category C drug. Thus, you should not take this drug during pregnancy. Neglecting this aspect can be harmful for the baby as the drug is capable of passing to the fetus. You should also avoid using this medication if you are breast feeding your baby as it can get released into your breast milk and affect your infant adversely.

Drug Interactions of Levophed

Levophed is capable of interacting with:

  • Other Blood Pressure Medications
  • MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline)
  • Antidepressant Drugs (amitriptyline, amoxapine, imipramine, trimipramine)

If you are taking any of these medications, inform the doctor in advance. The doctor will advise you to make the necessary dosage adjustments or suggest any other alternative. Roxicet, a pain reliever, is a name for a combination of the generic drugs- Oxycodone and Acetaminophen. It is a highly addictive Schedule 2 drug. Oxycodone is in the class of drugs called narcotic analgesics, which helps in relieving moderate to severe pain.  Acetaminophen, although a less potent pain reliever, complements and intensifies the effects of the Oxycodone.

It is available in other brand names as well, which include :

  • Endocet,
  • Magnacet,
  • Narvox,
  • Tylox,
  • Percs,
  • Paulas,
  • Perloxx,
  • Primalev,
  • Roxicotten and
  • Percocet 2.5/325

Roxicet can be administered in several ways- orally, intravenously, intramuscularly or even rectally.

Roxicet Strengths

Roxicet is available in the following strengths:

  • Roxicet oral solution – This contains 5mg of Oxycodone and 325mg of Acetaminophen, per 5 ml.
  • Roxicet 5/325 mg tablets – It contains 5mg of Oxycodone and 325mg of Acetaminophen.
  • Roxicet 5/500 mg caplets – It contains 5mg of Oxycodone and 500mg of Acetaminophen.

Before taking Roxicet

You are advised not to take Roxicet if you are allergic to either Oxycodone or Acetaminophen. Keep the doctor informed, if you possess any of the following symptoms, before using Roxicet:

  • Underactive Thyroid
  • Asthma, COPD< sleep apnea, or any other breathing disorder
  • An intestinal or pancreas disorder
  • Any seizure disorder like Epilepsy
  • Liver or kidney disorder
  • Low blood pressure
  • Enlarged prostrate.
  • Brain tumor or any sort of head injury.
  • Mental illness.

You should never use Roxicet without telling your doctor, as it may cause undesirable effects.

Roxicet Dosage

Always take Roxicet exactly as prescribed by the doctor. Never take it in larger amounts, or for a longer duration than recommended by the doctor. Do not stop using the medicine suddenly, without informing your doctor. You may need to you less and less before completely withdrawing the usage of this medicine.

On Missing a Dose

Acetaminophen and Oxycodone should always be taken as prescribed and required by the body. If you are on a regular medication, then take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. But if it is too late, and time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and take the scheduled dose. Do not consume extra dose to make up for the missed one.

Roxicet Overdose

An overdose of Oxycodone and Acetaminophen can be fatal. It is absolutely necessary to seek medical help if you have consumed too much of this medicine. The first symptoms of Roxicet overdose include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, sweating, confusion and weakness. Later on, there may be symptoms such as pain in upper stomach, dark urine, yellowing of your skin or darkening of your eyes.

Overdose symptoms also include jaundice, extreme drowsiness, pinpoint pupils, shallow breathing, fainting, coma, blue lips, weak pulse, and no breathing or slow heart rate.

Roxicet Liquid

Roxicet is available in the form of tablets, syrups or injections. If Roxicet oral liquid is being used, there is a prescribed dose for its consumption which should be generally followed. Measure the Roxicet oral liquid with a special dose measuring spoon or cup, not the regular table or tea spoon. Store the liquid at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Always keep a track of the amount of Roxicet used from each bottle. Oxycodone is a drug of abuse and you should not allow anyone else to use it without being prescribed. The amount of acetaminophen for adults is 1000 mg per dose and 4000 mg per day. Drink 6 to 8 glasses of water daily to prevent yourself from constipation while you are on a scheduled medication of Roxicet.

Continuous use of Roxicet may cause a loss of concentration, dizziness, sweating, constipation, dry mouth, nausea or drowsiness in the users. They may also experience personal and psychological issues that can affect relationship and impair function, which may result in employment difficulties, family or financial problems, and even legal problems.

Roxicet Addiction

Roxicet is a highly powered pain killer, and if its use is not monitored carefully, it can result in Roxicet Addiction. Roxicet Medication is usually followed after a surgery, and should not be recommended for a long period of time. Although this is a prescribed medicine, yet it can cause addiction as it belongs to the same family as other illicit opiates as Heroin, Oxycontin, Morphine, Vicodin, etc.

The chief cause of Roxicet Addiction is the presence of Oxycodone in the medicine.  Oxycodone causes the user to crave the drug with intensity and complete preoccupation. The user would not hesitate to go to any means to get the drug; such is the effect of oxycodone on them. Not only does he suffer a physical decline, but also a moral decline, as their possession with the opiate will seek a priority over their life.

The persons who are addicted to Roxicet show signs of isolation, illogical explanation, change or lack of friends, lying or even stealing as for that matter.

Roxicet Addiction Treatments

Roxicet addiction hampers our nervous system, causing immense damage to the body and our mind. The person suspected with this addiction should be bought under the purview of medical supervision and should be given due attention. This drug can cause immense damage if the user is not bought under the supervision of a physician and his medical plan.

As a primary step to the treatment of this addiction, the user has to go through the process of Detoxification. He is recommended to go to the detoxification center to quickly start with this process. This is to be followed by the recommendation of the physician. He is even recommended to take the help of a qualified Psychiatrist.  Psychological evaluation is a very effective treatment at this stage, as it helps to get rid of the addiction completely. The user should be under complete medical care until he has completely recovered from this addiction and its harmful effects.

Roxicet Abuse

Roxicet is a pain reliever, but it gradually blocks the pain receptors in the brain, and makes the user feel euphoric. He starts craving for the drug, as the desire is gradually becomes a want. So much so, that the withdrawal symptoms are not only severe, but almost impossible.

There should be a close monitoring for the administration of Roxicet to follow the potentially harmful impacts and severe complications:

  • Hypotensive Effect
  • Head injury and increased Intracranial Pressure
  • Hepatotoxicity
  • Respiratory depression.

Roxicet and Pregnancy

It is not derived through medical tests whether Roxicet can cause any fatal damage to the pregnant women, as animal reproductive tests have not been carried out through Roxicet. But it is suggested that this medicine should not be given to pregnant women, unless the physician so prescribes it. He may prescribe it when he thinks that the benefit of this drug is far more to outweigh the potential hazards.

The negative effects of Roxiocet on pregnant women are:

Labor and Delivery: Roxicet causes serious impacts on the respiratory system of the new born, so it should not be given to the mothers immediately prior to delivery

Nonteratogenic Effects: Roxicet can cause placental barriers. It may also result in the foetus being completely drug dependent.

Nursing mothers: Nursing mothers should avoid the consumption of Roxicet as it may cause respiratory depression and sedation in the new born. Both Oxycodone and Acetaminophen is excreted in the breast milk, which may result in lethargy in the infants.

Roxicet Withdrawl

Withdrawal from Roxicet can cause some very serious impacts on the body and the respiratory tract. It can cause respiratory depression. Therefore it is recommended that the use of Roxicet should not be stopped at once, instead it should be reduced slowly and then finally stopped to ensure safety to the patient.

Roxicet Withdrawl Symptoms

The withdrawal symptoms for Roxicet are:

  • Diarrhea
  • Insomnia
  • Tearing
  • Increased heart rate
  • Dilated pupil
  • Pronounced weakness
  • Restlessness
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Depression
  • Running nose
  • Anxiety
  • Seizures
  • Backaches
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle spasms
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Sweating

Roxicet is a very effective pain reliever. But you must have an idea about its negative implications as well so that you do not go onto becoming a Roxicet addict. Take this medicine only if it is recommended by your physician. It can benefit you if it is taken in the right amount, at the right time.

Amoxicillin is a very important drug for bacterial infection treatment. However, some people are allergic to this medicine. Amoxicillin can produce several side effects in such people. These allergenic symptoms consist of

Rashes

As a side-effect of Amoxicillin rashes are very common. These can appear on the skin several days after taking the medicine. The rashes usually appear as tiny lumps on the skin and are red in color. Allergic rashes are usually non-itchy. In a few cases, non-allergic rashes may also develop. These are accompanied with itchiness. They generally arise about three days after Amoxicillin intake.

Itchiness

People can suffer from mild to acute cases of itchiness sometime after having Amoxicillin. The allergic reactions of Amoxicillin intake usually start with an itching sensation. Itchiness can arise in localized skin areas such as fingertips or groin.

The affected person may also suffer from mental changes such as anxiety.

Blood pressure Drop

Patients may also suffer from a sudden drop in blood pressure. This can give rise to dizziness and even fainting.

Breathing Difficulties

Facial Inflammation

Inflammation is one of the major allergenic side effects of Amoxicillin. The cheeks, lips and entire facial region may swell. Facial swelling is one of the most serious Amoxicillin effects. Immediate treatment is needed in such cases.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea can also arise as an allergenic symptom of Amoxicillin intake. Digestive distress is quite common after Amoxicillin consumption. Amoxicillin in Pregnancy

In women consuming amoxicillin pregnancy is not affected. So far, Amoxicillin has not been found to produce any complication during pregnancy. But physicians are skeptical as antibiotics generally come with side-effects. Amoxicillin destroys beneficial bacteria in the vagina and intestine which results n yeast infection. Amoxicillin use on pregnant women should be avoided as far as possible.

Treatment for Amoxicillin Reactions

Treatment generally depends on the nature of side-effects produced by Amoxicillin intake. Amoxicillin yeast infection cases can be cured by eating plenty of yoghurt. For patients of infection caused by amoxicillin yogurt consumption is highly beneficial. Having yoghurt in the early stages of infection can help prevent the disease by killing the fungus which acts as the causative factor. Cranberry juice and garlic can also help in combating fungal infection. In case of allergic reactions, symptoms may arise quickly and become very complicated. In a few cases, life-threatening health complications can also be seen. In such cases, amoxicillin dosage has to be immediately stopped. Non-allergic Amoxicillin rashes do not require quitting Amoxicillin dose. Even if a rash develops without allergic symptoms, it is necessary to seek immediate medical assistance. Microgestin is normally available in packs containing 21 tablets which are meant to be taken regularly for a period of 21 days. The tablets are supposed to be taken at the same time each day. Some of the famous microgestin brand names are Loestrin and Junel. In fact, loestrin and junel microgestin are generic names of these drugs .

Microgestin Fe 1/20 or 1.5/30

The marketing of microgestin birth control pills with the suffix ‘fe’ is connotative of the fact that such microgestin tablets also contain ferrous fumarate which is a supplement of iron. Since microgestin is actually approved for women who have already experienced menstruation earlier, the iron content in microgestin, i.e., microgestin Fe helps in renewing the iron lost due to menstrual bleeding.

Along with this, the use of microgestin has certain other advantages such as the occurrence of regular but predictable menstruation, the reduction of menstrual pain as well as the decreased possibility of endometrial or ovarian cancer. It should be primarily kept in mind that microgestin prevents pregnancy and not protection from sexually transmitted diseases.

Microgestin Side Effects

The regular use of microgestin as prescribed by the doctor does not wipe away the harmful effects that it has on the body. The side effects of microgestin are also quite a few a numbers which may either be mild or serious depending on the dose and the nature of its use.

The microgestin fe side effects which are mid in nature may be enumerated as the following:-

  • Microgestin allergic reaction may cause hives, problems of breathing, itching and mouth swelling, the development of rashes and wheezing.
  • A feeling of nausea accompanied with vomiting and stomach cramps.
  • The tanning or the darkening of the face and the occurrence of freckles.
  • Hair loss.
  • Microgestin weight gain or loss.
  • Sudden numbness and feebleness.
  • Sudden headache accompanied with eye pain and dizziness.
  • Auditory or speech problems.
  • Pain in the chest and the body.
  • Swelling of the breast, its tenderness and a painful feeling.
  • Eye problems may also arise due to this especially among those using contact lenses.
  • Microgestin acne is also a mild side effect of its use.
  • Menstrual problems along with itching of the vagina or its bleeding.
  • The use of microgestin may also reduce the sexual drive of a person.

However, if the mild side effects go unchecked and one does not take precautionary measures, the conditions may precipitate to serious microgestin side effects. Some of the serious ones caused due to the side effects of strong microgestin ingredients may be mentioned as follows:-

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark yellowish urine and clay colored stools may indicate damage caused to the liver.
  • Heavy bleeding from the vagina.
  • Reeling of the head due to high blood pressure or hypertension.
  • Heart problems may also arise due to high cholesterol levels caused due to the side effects of microgestin fe.
  • Severe headache, extreme weakness and highly detectable speech or vision changes may be signs of a stroke.
  • The occurrence of migraines or changes in the nature of their occurrence.
  • The formation of lumps on the breast or the discharge of fluids from the same.
  • Calf pain, leg cramps and the swelling of the leg or the foot may indicate the clotting of the blood in the leg.
  • Microgestin may also cause the clotting of blood in the lungs which is indicated by the shortness of breath, pain in the chest and the ejection of blood along with cough.
  • Chest pain of a severe nature may be the symptom of an heart attack.
  • Microgestin breakthrough bleeding is also a serious but common side effect of microgestin.
  • Amenorrhea or the absence of menstruation is also a serious side effect of using microgestin. Although fertility is regained by most women within six months of stopping microgestin, yet it can be a serious affair if fertility does not regain in time.

So, due to such harmful side effects of microgestin fe its use is not so easily encouraged. Moreover, as a precautionary measure, people suffering from problems such as blood clot, hormonal cancer, diabetes, and liver diseases are prohibited to use microgestin or any other birth control pills. In place of the same, the use of condoms and other physical contraceptives such as Copper-T is advisable. People vulnerable to lung and heart disease are not permitted to use this oral contraceptive as it may prove to be fatal.

Besides, the use of microgestin is permitted only after 4-6 weeks of delivery or during breast feeding so as to avoid the possibility of causing harm to the new born baby. Smoking or the use of tobacco is also prohibited during the period of use of microgestin.

Although the regular use of microgestin helps in preventing pregnancy, yet one must be aware as not to miss a dose as microgestin missed period may increase the possibility of pregnancy. But the use of this pill must be supervised by a doctor and one must follow the aid and advice of the same so as to prevent the birth of a baby as well as adopt the ways to tackle the side effects of microgestin.
